The Walking Dead: Dead City, the newest entry into the Walking Dead universe, is the first direct spin-off since the main franchise wrapped its final season last fall. The new series follows fan favorites Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffery Dean Morgan) as they travel to Manhattan, where walkers have taken a bite out of the Big Apple, literally.

The series premieres Sunday, June 18 at 9pm ET on AMC, but the first episode is already available ad-free with a subscription to AMC+. Here’s a brief look at what to expect. Escape From New York

The basic plot of the series centers around Maggie and Negan’s attempts to rescue Maggie’s now-teenaged son Hershel (Logan Kim), who has been abducted by NYC’s No. 1 psycho, The Croat (Željko Ivanek). Turns out the circle of crazy cult leaders is smaller than you might guess, and Croat and Negan share some history. Can Maggie forgive the man who killed Glenn or will the stress of the mission fracture their delicate alliance?

Negan Plays Nice?

Jeffery Dean Morgan has done a sensational job in the role of Negan, as he’s taken a once irredeemable villain and made him into a much more complex character. That continues in Dead City, where Negan has partnered with a silent teenage sidekick (Mahina Napoleon), while being pursued by a marshal (Gaius Charles) out for justice. As with the main franchise, the question of Negan’s redemption is foregrounded in Dead City.

Yes We Canon

In a positive review of the show for Variety, critic Jessica Liese promises that viewers will be, “rewarded with answers to every question the series raises.” In fact, Liese says that once the loose ends begin to tie up around the mid-season mark (this season is a lean six episodes), “these resolutions are frequently deeply connected to prior Walking Dead canon.” She also praises the show for coming up with, “truly inventive new ways in which to showcase the dead’s potential to decompose, split apart, melt, or otherwise become, well, more dead.”

The show currently boasts a 77% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, so plenty of critics agree. You can stream the first episode right now by subscribing to AMC+, where you can also watch hundreds of other shows and movies, all ad-free.
