Top 5 Matches We’re Most Excited For at AEW Full Gear
With AEW's Full Gear available on Sling PPV for $49.99, here's a look at 5 matches we can't wait to see!
A lot of things tend to slow down as the holidays approach. Work (hopefully) gets slower as people take vacation. The weather gets cooler, leading to less time exercising outdoors and more time stuffing our faces indoors. The holidays are generally a time to relax (and brace for a visit from the in-laws).

Match #1 - AEW World Championship Match: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Orange Cassidy
https://youtu.be/PVpd1X8zfVA?si=_aPmgs0IaWO6XxeC
The story - Safe to say Jon Moxley is in his villain era. Even after winning the title belt from his former friend and stablemate Bryan Danielson and sending him into retirement, Mox and his Death Riders brutally attacked the American Dragon. Since then, Mox has been on a mission to burn down the corruption he sees in AEW and rebuild it into something more pure. His method: violence. No one has been safe, including Orange Cassidy’s friend Chuck Taylor, who almost had his neck broken by the Moxley’s posse. Amidst all this chaos, Orange Cassidy (with an assist from Darby Allin), has emerged as the champion to defend AEW and rid it of the pestilence that are the Death Riders. Will the King of Sloth Style be able to end the reign of terror? Or will he just be another speed bump on Moxley’s road to oblivion?
Why we’re excited - Wrestling loves a good takeover/ invasion story. Rather than coming from the outside (a la the NWO), Mox’s stable is more homegrown, taking the form of a group disillusioned with the direction of the company and determined to do something about it. The fact that Orange Cassidy has emerged as the defender of AEW’s honor is an incredible rise for the man that debuted largely as a comedy act, but has always had incredible talent in the ring, and is no stranger to violence himself. Something else to watch for: How will the numbers game play out here with Moxley’s Death Riders vs. Darby Allin and the Conglomeration? This one will be pure chaos. And it’s for the world title!
Match #2 - TBS Championship Match: Mercedes Mone © vs. Kris Statlander
The story - Kris Statlander has been on quite a downward slide, losing her friendship with Willow Nightengale and separating from her manager Stokely Hathaway, all while championship gold has eluded her. Meanwhile Mercedes Moné is seemingly on top of the world, in the middle of a dominant TBS championship run and having her back watched by the “Brickhouse” Kamille. It won’t just be words that collide in this match, but also fists. The violence won’t wait for the ring though. The duo of Mone/Kamille already tried to take Statlander out with a car (blame Kamille’s driving) and Statlander responded by spearing the two through a wall. Buckle up folks, these ladies aren’t here for games.
Why we’re excited - We’ve made no secret about being a big fan of Kris Statlander. She brings a fascinating combination of agility and power, and has done an incredible job building her character over the last couple of years, really making us feel her ups and downs. She is the exact type of character you want to root for against the cocky CEO. It is also an interesting contrast of the traditional David vs. Goliath underdog story, with Statlander being the Goliath underdog with her size advantage over the champ. We have a feeling Kamille will even those odds, but how much more of Moné’s patronizing treatment can she take?
Match #3 - Will Ospreay vs. Kyle Fletcher
https://youtu.be/ps6rqb4KoD8?si=5yN01Mi1gIqbFmbJ
The story - Wrestling has a way of spoiling longstanding friendships, doesn’t it? Will Ospreay considered Kyle Fletcher a best friend and served as a bit of a mentor as the two ran roughshod over Japan as part of the United Empire stable. Ospreay helped to get Fletcher his opportunity in AEW, and how does the Protostar repay his Bruv? By costing him the International Title in brutal fashion. The way Fletcher sees it (no doubt influenced by the dastardly Don Callis), Ospreay has always been all about himself and looks down on Kyle. Well, they will be standing face to face for this one, in what will surely be a clash for the ages between two of the brightest and most gifted stars anywhere. Let’s just hope we get a clean match (or, on second thought, maybe not).
Why we’re excited - These are two of the best young wrestlers in the world. Pay close attention to this one, you will likely see something you’ve never seen before nor thought was possible. These guys are that good, and may very well be the future of the sport as a whole.
Match #4 - Bobby Lashley vs. Swerve Strickland
The story - Since losing his title and his bloody conflict with Hangman Page, Swerve Strickland has been at a cross-roads, itching to get back into the title picture. A potential shortcut emerged with the arrival of MVP and his Hurt Syndicate. Surely having the backing of the conniving MVP and physical Adonis like Shelton Benjamin would be an offer the former champion couldn’t refuse? Well, not only did Swerve refuse it (sticking with his current manager Prince Nana), but he turned it down emphatically. What has resulted in the coming weeks is repeated conflicts between Swerve and the former Hurt Business, but the stakes kicked into high gear with the debut of the Almighty Bobby Lashley. Now, what could have been Swerve’s ace in the hole may end up putting him six feet under.
Why we’re excited - The will he/ won’t he recruitment angle is a classic trope in wrestling, even going back to DDP turning down the NWO in the form of a diamond cutter to all involved. Will Swerve be able to stave off the Hurt Syndicate and the temptation it brings? This story truly could go either way. Add in the fact that the former champ is up against one of the best, most underrated superstars of the last two decades, and this clash should be amazing. Bobby Lashley has long been a favorite of ours, even going back to the clash of Donald Trump vs. Vince McMahon. The Almighty has seemingly defied time, as he is more of an intimidating presence at this point in his career than most stars can reach in their lifetime. Simply put, he just looks like someone who can hurt you. How appropriate.
Match #5 - MJF vs. Roderick Strong
https://youtu.be/YoILiDHAGq4?si=nLGa1ygrWLhk64tC
The story - Since his return from a long absence, Adam Cole and his Undisputed Kingdom teammates have had their sights set on taking out MJF. The two’s lovable bromance ended sourly when Cole betrayed MJF and cost him the title to Samoa Joe, while MJF returned the favor by taking out the still-injured Cole upon his return. Now healthy, Cole and Roderick Strong want to finish the job. Things are rarely straightforward with MJF though, with the prince of Long Island declaring that the first wrestler to win three straight matches could face him. Cole fell short thanks to the Don Callis family (under employment from MJF, naturally), and Roddy prevailed. Thus it falls to Roderick Strong to strike the next blow vs. MJF, though we doubt this one will be that straightforward. Where these guys are involved, it never is.
Why we’re excited - Adam Cole’s injury certainly impacted the Devil storyline, but we think the feud between MJF and the Undisputed Kingdom is far from done. It is an interesting twist that Adam Cole (our protagonist? We aren’t really sure) fell short while his self-proclaimed best friend earned the “honor”) of facing MJF at Full Gear. We know two things: 1) this will be a match between two of the best technicians in the game and; 2) We have no idea what twists and turns await around the corner.
