Top 5 Matches We’re Most Excited For at AEW Double or Nothing 2024

AEW is heading back to Las Vegas for their annual 'Double or Nothing' PPV. Here are our top five matches, plus how to stream live with Sling!

When you think of Fabulous Las Vegas, what comes to mind? Perhaps it is laying by the pool after feasting like a Caesar at the Bacchanal. Perhaps it is taking in a death-defying spectacle such as Cirque Du Soleil. Maybe it is just people-watching at the table while you observe others take risks you couldn’t dream of affording. Well, AEW wrestling may not have the crab leg feast, but they certainly check the rest of those boxes when they pull into town for their annual AEW Double or Nothing PPV, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena on 8PM ET on May 26. With a healthy buffet of bludgeoning already on the menu and more dishes sure to be added, we know where the most action will be Memorial Day weekend. Here’s a look at the card.

On a weekend where we remember our fallen heroes and – if we are being honest – drink way too many light beers/seltzers, we will be glued to our seats to see which champions are immortalized, and which fade into memory like 2am at the craps table. Here’s a look at our Top 5 Matches; to order the AEW Double or Nothing PPV with Sling, navigate to “On Demand” and click the “Rentals” tab in the Sling app, or just the link below to order now!

Match #1 - Anarchy in the Arena Match:Anarchy in the Arena: The Elite vs. Team AEW (FTR, Bryan Danielson & Darby Allin)

https://www.youtube.com/embed/MF-rH_TSvL4?si=Sv_U5tvFBMX4ur9k

The story - This match would have enough of a story if it were just the Young Bucks going toe-to-toe with FTR in yet another chapter of one of the greatest modern day rivalries in tag team wrestling. But like with all wrestling, it isn’t that simple and we are all better for it. The EVP’s have really leaned into their roles as the tyrannical authority figures in AEW, dismantling all in their path (including AEW boss Tony Khan, who was even wearing a neck brace on draft day!). Their latest victim was longtime friend and talent relations executive, the fallen angel Christopher Daniels. The Bucks aren’t alone though, with the Rainmaker Kazuchika Okada and the Scapegoat Jack Perry, they create a team that can back up their villainous antics. Heck even poor Tony Schiavone wasn’t spared (we can’t imagine having a Woo energy poured on our heads on live TV would be a career highlight).

Opposing the Elite alongside FTR are Bryan Danielson and Darby Allin. Danielson has turned into somewhat of a locker room leader and confidante of Tony Khan, so it isn’t shocking to see him rising to defend AEW. Darby Allin is the real wild card, as he’s just returning from injury (an injury that sidelined him from climbing Mt. Everest). Darby Allin is unpredictable in any match, and when you throw the entire arena into the fold as their battlefield, fans ought to buckle up. You are going to see something that will thrill and astound you, we guarantee it. We just hope these guys are able to walk to a nice icebath in the aftermath. They will need it.

Why we’re excited - Wrestling, like all drama, can occasionally fall into the trap of predictability, of playing it safe. That will not be a problem here. Every Anarchy in the Arena match gives us one insane spot after another. It really is a canvas where the most creative minds can paint their masterpiece, often in their own blood. The story here is great. We personally want to see the Young Bucks get punched in the face (ideally, repeatedly), or the smug smile get washed off Jack Perry’s face. But story notwithstanding, we are just excited to see some of the best minds in the business put on a show in literally one of the biggest stages possible.

Match #2 AEW TBS Championship Match: Willow Nightingale vs. Mercedes Moné

The story - Willow winning the TBS championship off of Julia Hart was the culmination of years of build up. She is an example of a wrestler working her butt off, winning over the crowd, and strapping the rocket to her own back, making for quite a cathartic payoff when she finally raised AEW gold. Her opponent Mercedes Moné knows something about gold, however, and also has a bone to pick. Since the CEO debuted in AEW in BOSSton, she has had a target on Willow’s back, blaming her for an injury during her NJPW run. Now Mercedes finally gets to take to the ring with revenge and bling on her mind. Get your popcorn ready, this one is personal.

Why we’re excited - Mercedes Moné has been one of the most hyped debuts in AEW for a while. Despite this, we still haven’t seen much of her in an actual ring. She is possibly the most talented female wrestler on the planet, and we are hyped to see her lock up in AEW. We wouldn’t expect her to just waltz her way to gold, however. WIllow is a tough opponent and will clearly have a power advantage, especially when the straps come down. Will Willow be able to hold off an old foe and continue building her fledgling title run? Or will the former Sasha Banks make a statement and put the rest of the locker room on notice (if they aren’t already).

Match #3 -AEW World Championship Match: Swerve Strickland vs. Christian Cage

https://www.youtube.com/embed/KkAmu4wP5Ek?si=EymQPMSDBdnLEaxP

The story - This one goes back a bit. Back before the days of the Patriarchy (the wrestling stable led by Christian Cage), Swerve Strickland left young Nick Wayne bloody and beaten to get in the head of his mentor Darby Allin. Now fast forward, and a decidedly less heel Swerve will have to face up to this injustice, not with Wayne himself, but with his “father” Christian Cage. It really is a poetic turn of events, and knowing Christian and his cronies, this could easily end in a Con-Chair -to crescendo for the champ. Swerve is used to the odds being stacked against him; that has been the story of his career and he has overcome both the odds and several of AEW’s finest in the process to earn his spot on top. Getting to the top is often easier than staying there, however, so will Swerve be able to maintain his spot on the mountain? Or will he be the next wrestler whose daddy issues are exposed by the father figure of professional wrestling, Christian Cage?

Why we’re excited - As we alluded to above, this is tremendous long term storytelling for Swerve’s first challenger for the title. We often take for granted the long narrative, because of the many role reversals that happen. The best matches give the competitors reasons for fighting besides just a belt, and in Christian’s sick mind, he probably believes he is avenging his son Nick Wayne. While Swerve is technically the hero of this story with the belt, the way this has been framed certainly blurs the lines, as all the best stories do. Oh, and these two are absolute maestros in the ring. We can’t forget the wrestling part.

Match #4 - AEW International Championship Match: Roderick Strong vs. Will Ospreay

The story - Will Ospreay has been on a tear since joining AEW full-time, compiling a record of 8-0 while feeling unstoppable (and looking that way too). It was only a matter of time before his sights were set on a title. While it isn’t the AEW Championship, the International Title has proven to be no slouch, carving out its niche as the workhorse title (largely thanks to former title holder Orange Cassidy, who Roderick Strong beat for the title). We wouldn’t call this outcome a foregone conclusion. Roddy is one of the most intellectually ruthless wrestlers in AEW, strategically targeting any opening an opponent gives him (Orange Cassidy’s back probably will never be the same). While Ospreay hasn’t divulged any obvious weaknesses in his dominant run, Roddy is just the type to expose them.

Why we’re excited - Any time Will Ospreay is involved, that bout has the potential to be the match of the night. His dance partner in Vegas is known as an absolute technician himself, so prepare for just darn good wrestling. And let’s be honest, we are watching anytime Will Ospreay is on the screen, he is that good. That being said, Roddy is just the type of crafty veteran that could stun the hotshot rookie. This match will be closer than a lot of people might give it credit for. Strong can go.

Match #5 -TNT Championship Barbed Wire Steel Cage Match: Adam Copeland vs. Malakai Black

https://www.youtube.com/embed/tMSlGIEJqqk?si=Zy6zy3TlaTSZb39U

The story - Adam Copeland has had an incredibly entertaining run since vanquishing old frenemy Christian for TNT title. He has seemingly turned back the clock, putting on entertaining banger after banger with the young guns of AEW. His next challenge, however, is a bit more…sinister. After tussling with Big Bad Brody King, Copeland now finds himself against the leader of house of Black, the King of the Black throne himself - Malakai. As if that weren’t enough, he endured a brutal beating on a recent episode of Dynamite, with Malakai revealing that if Copeland loses he will have to bend the knee to the House of Black. Copeland is no stranger to the borderline supernatural though (cue the Brood theme), so we have a feeling he will be ready to fight fire with fire. That being said, we are in Vegas, and the House always wins.

Why we’re excited - It is a barbed wire steel cage match. The squeamish need not apply.
