Every great sport has its crescendo. Where audiences of thousands watch the best in their sport erase any doubt about their place in history.

Match #1 - AEW World Championship Title vs. Career Match: Swerve Strickland vs. Bryan Danielson

https://www.youtube.com/embed/2gT5-FllPP4?si=qdKByKw7PfC1nmpa

The story - If this is a retirement tour for the “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson, he certainly hasn’t taken it easy since joining AEW. While he has put on some incredible, high-profile matches (our personal favorite being his iron-man match with MJF), AEW’s top prize has eluded him. During what may very-well be his final active year as competitor, Danielson called his shot at the Owen Hart cup, upending bitter Swerve rival "Hangman" Adam Page in the finals, earning a title shot. Further upping the ante in what has been an emotional build, Danielson declared this shot against fellow Pacific Northwesterner Swerve Strickland to be for his career. If Danielson wins, he can finally add AEW gold to what’s already a Hall-Of-Fame resume. If Strickland wins, Danielson closes his final chapter as one of the best to ever do it.

Why we’re excited - There are no bigger stakes than this. A clash of this magnitude calls back to the legendary feud between Shawn Michaels and the Undertaker at Wrestlemania. These “retirement” stipulations aren’t just lip service either; Michaels lost his “Streak vs. Career” match and retired. Given what he has at stake, we’ve talked mostly about Danielson, but Swerve has a lot on the line as well. He scored a decisive victory over Will Ospreay to really legitimize his championship reign, but he will need to keep stacking wins to make his turn with the gold more than a footnote. Ending the legendary career of Danielson – one of the few technicians that can match Swerve in the ring – would be precisely what the doctor ordered.

Match #2 - AEW Women’s World Championship Match: Toni Storm vs. Mariah May

The story - In a twist straight out of Hollywood (seriously, look up All About Eve), the “Glamour” Mariah May finally showed her true colors upon winning the Owen Hart tournament and securing her shot at championship glory. Leaving her mentor bloody and distraught (the weapon: her signature shoe), May made it very clear that it was time to turn the page on Timeless Toni Storm. This came after months of courting Toni’s good graces as her number one fan, even donning Toni’s old outfits in an effort to truly understand her eventual adversary (we suppose that would be method acting). From Mariah May’s perspective though, Toni has no one to blame but herself, having created the monster that she must now face down at Wembley. Mariah May certainly seems "All In" on ending Toni Storm. That being said, a multi-time champion like Toni Storm won’t go quietly as the credits roll, and we are betting she has a few more scenes in mind, in particular one involving a shoe to Mariah May’s face.

Why we’re excited - Some of the best stories in wrestling often draw inspiration from outside of wrestling. The way AEW has played out Toni Storm and Mariah May’s arc has been worthy of a curtain call. For months, we’ve watched Mariah worm her way into Toni’s graces as a fan, protégé, and somewhat of a love interest. These things never last in the world of wrestling, so it was only a matter of time before May would strike out on her own, and doing so after securing her shot at Storm should have been predictable. Instead, the brutality that May showed against someone she supposedly looked up to proved to be absolutely shocking, setting this up as a "match of the night" candidate. This story is so good, we haven’t even touched on the fact both of these ladies are incredible in the ring. Will Toni Storm be able to pull herself together to keep her spot on top of the mountain? Or will the “Glamour” call scene on the timeless one?

Match #3 - AEW TBS Championship Match: Mercedes Moné vs. Britt Baker

https://www.youtube.com/embed/cchNRkxulBw?si=IS1zJEbwogGQ-eHW

The story - The self-proclaimed CEO of AEW, Mercedes Moné, has certainly made an impact during her run in AEW. Arriving with much fanfare in her hometown of Boston, Moné captured the TBS championship from Willow Nightingale shortly thereafter. At Forbidden Door, she managed to add to her already impressive bling by downing Stephanie Vaquer to capture the NJPW Strong Women’s Championship, making her a double-champion. This achievement was quickly interrupted by a returning Britt Baker (to a massive audience pop we might add). The DMD wasted no time reminding Mercedes of her status as the face of the women’s division (as AEW’s first signee to said division), and she wasn’t going to sit idly by during Moné's hostile takeover. Mercedes, despite all her talk, didn’t plan to take the Dr. lightly, debuting the “Brickhouse” Kamille as her enforcer with a brutal attack on Britt. Will the DMD manage to extract the title from the formidable? Or will the former Sasha Banks make a statement?

Why we’re excited - Throughout Mercedes' run, we couldn’t help but wonder what established AEW stars such as Britt Baker were thinking as they watched this newcomer enter the fray with so much hype. Well, Britt certainly let us know her stance on the matter, and the intensity of this feud has really elevated the TBS championship to a level on par with the main title. One thing we will keep an eye on, Mercedes has her reinforcements with Kamille, but Britt has a friend she can call on in Jamie Hayter, who happens to be from England. Call it wishful thinking on our part, but that could be a next level reaction if a returning Hayter gets involved in front of her countrymen. We are here for it. Hayters gonna Hayte.

Match #4 - AEW American Championship Match: MJF vs. Will Ospreay

The story - Things were already heated between MJF and Will Ospreay prior to their championship match on the 250th episode of AEW Dynamite. Until that point, Ospreay had been on an absolute heater, only falling to AEW champion Swerve Strickland at Forbidden Door. The two had been circling each other for weeks, culminating in the aforementioned title match, when MJF not only captured Ospreay’s title, but tossed it in the trash, replacing it with the unofficial “American” Championship. This surely grinded the British Ospreay’s gears, and now he gets a chance to recapture and rechristen the title in front of his countrymen. Can the hometown kid regain his dominant streak? Or will he be another tasty morsel for the lone wolf of AEW?

Why we’re excited - Wrestling promotions in the US have never shied away from patriotic storylines. In fact, Hulk Hogan and Lex Luger built careers off of this angle. This is an interesting twist though, with MJF being the “foreign” heel embodying many American stereotypes. To that end, this makes for some pretty awesome tongue-in-cheek storytelling, even if it isn’t the most complicated story ever told. Apart from that, we get to watch two of the foundational pieces of the present and future of professional wrestling. Need we say more.

Match #5 - AEW TNT Championship Coffin Match: Jack Perry vs. Darby Allin

https://www.youtube.com/embed/_y1SjKTnJhM?si=vCh-qZBvwnVu4Hf3

The story - It’s safe to say this is the only match where one contestant previously set the other on fire with a flamethrower (this is professional wrestling in the year 2024). After losing as part of Team AEW in the Anarchy in the Arena match (and, per usual, taking a heck of a beating in the process), Darby Allin returned to join Team AEW for revenge at Blood and Guts. Here, by threatening to set Jack Perry on fire once again, Darby managed to extract a title match against him for the strap. Of course, because it is Darby, things escalated to a coffin match (not that we're complaining). Will Darby coffin-drop the lid on the Scapegoat’s title reign? Or will this coffin lead Perry to a fire of a different, more permanent kind this time around?

Why we’re excited - Darby Allin reminds us of a sick combination of Fear Factor and Jackass. We probably should look away – we wish we could look away – yet we keep watching. He truly is a captivating entertainer who is never content with the risk level from the previous match. There is always a higher ladder to climb…and inevitably coffin-drop off of. Speaking of people taking it up a notch, that trip to NJPW was the best thing that could have happened to Jack Perry. His work as a villain is truly masterful these days, from taking out Tony Khan to bullying Tony Schiavone. He is a champion we love to hate, and you have to love that.
