Every four years, the FIFA World Cup™ becomes one of the most watched sporting events in the world – over 3.5 billion people tuned in to the 2018 edition in Russia – but this year, soccer fans have had to wait an extra couple of months to witness its drama. To nullify the excruciating temperatures reached in host country Qatar during the normal June time slot, the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ was moved to the winter months.

However, the change in schedule and the strict rules awaiting attendees are not the biggest controversies swirling around this year’s World Cup. Vice has consistently covered the human rights issues and Netflix is even coming out with a documentary about the corruption that has occurred within FIFA. With that said, the beautiful game is nevertheless poised to take the spotlight in the sporting landscape. In the United States, not only does it fall during the holiday season, it coincides with the NFL, College Football, NBA, NHL, and College Basketball seasons. That’s right: You can soon start your mornings off with the World Cup and finish them with football, basketball and hockey. Sporting Santa does exist!
So what can we look forward to seeing at Qatar 2022™? Can the US Men’s National team make a run after failing to qualify in 2018? Can Mexico finally get out of the Round of 16? Will Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo lead their nations to a World Cup title? Can Kylian Mbappe and France defend their title against Neymar, Vinicius Jr and the rest of the talented Brazil Selecao? These are just a sliver of the storylines surrounding the World Cup; you won’t want to miss the ones made in Qatar.
