NBA Cup Championship Preview
Although they may not be marquee franchises like the Los Angeles Lakers, last year’s NBA Cup champs, the Thunder and the Bucks both boast All-NBA First Teamers. In OKC, it’s last year’s MVP runner-up Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is making a strong case to claim that award this season. In the Thunder’s quarterfinal win over the Dallas Mavericks, SGA went off for 39 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and three steals, and followed that up with a game-high 32 points, eight boards, and six assists in their 111-96 win over the Houston Rockets in the semis. Gilgeous-Alexander currently leads the NBA in total points, and with a point-per-game average of 30.3, he’s one of just four players to average over 30 points per game.
The leader of that category is Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who paces the NBA with an average of 32.7 points per game, while pulling down 11.5 rebounds per game, the fifth-most. Giannis is also fifth in field goal percentage (61.4) and trails only reigning MVP Nikola Jokić of the Denver Nuggets in Fantasy Points Per Game. Antetokounmpo had 32 points, 14 boards, and nine assists in his team’s 110-102 semifinal win over the Atlanta Hawks, along with 37 points in their quarterfinal win over the Orlando Magic. If they win Tuesday’s championship game, Milwaukee would be the first team to go undefeated in the NBA Cup tournament.
Does the NBA Cup Championship Game Count in the Standings?
No. Unlike all other NBA Cup games, including the quarter and semifinals, this game will not count toward the final regular season standings. However, both teams have plenty to play for even beyond the cool trophy and a full season of bragging rights. The winning team – including all bench players and coaches – will take home $500,000 each, while the losing team will collect $200,000.
