This year’s Tour de France could get a little spike in viewership as cycling is the latest niche sport that has followed Formula 1’s Drive to Survive playbook. Tennis and golf respectively released their versions in Break Point and Full Swing. With cycling having lacked popularity in America since the days of Lance Armstrong, there is a hope that Tour de France: Unchained will help with the sports coverage stateside. Thus far it has garnered extremely positive reviews, including in the cycling community. The eight episode season follows the 2022 Tour De France, while profiling eight different teams. But the main story line is team Jumbo Visma and Jonas Vingegaard dethroning two time winner Tadej Pogacar, perfectly setting up the the main story of the race in 2023.

Now we’re no experts on cycling, but the least we can do is set the stage for why this Tour de France is so anticipated. This will be the third time Vindegaard (Team Jumbo Visma) and Pogacar (Team UAE Emirates) face off in Le Tour. In 2021, Vindegaard stepped in for injured Primoz Roglic to be the team leader and finished second to Pogacar. Then last year, behind a very strong team effort, the 26 year old Dane took down the 24 year old Slovenian. The UAE team have added strong riders to help combat what happened last year, and not only will the physical battle be under the microscope, but the tactical as well. According to The Guardian, this is the toughest opening week of the Tour since at least the second world war, which features a return to the Puy de Dôme, a brutal mountain stage, after 35 years. These two riders will always have an eye on one another as the grueling race goes from stage to stage.
