2023 Season Preview with Brian Lohnes
NHRA play-by-play broadcaster Brian Lohnes sat down with Sling TV and gave his thoughts on the upcoming 2023 Camping World NHRA Drag Racing Series season.
Top Fuel: "What we're looking to see in Top Fuel is two major barriers broken in performance: the first being, we're looking for someone to be the first car to ever to go 300 MPH to the 1/8 mile. The track itself is 1000 feet long, so the 1/8 mile is 660 feet. So somebody this year will do it - [they] will accelerate their car from a standing start to 300 MPH in the length of two football fields. And there's a $30,000 bonus for the first person to accomplish that.
"The other one we're looking for is the first car to go 340 MPH at the finish line. My own opinion is the first car that goes 300 to the 1/8 will then become, in that same run, likely the first car ever to go 340."
Funny Car: "Some of the biggest personalities are in the Funny Car category. We had kinda a three-man race to the finish last year [with Robert Hight, Ron Capps, and Matt Hagan], and we look to see that pick up right off the bat."
Pro Stock: "Erica Anders - arguably one of the greatest Pro Stock racers of all-time - she won her fifth career championship last season, and she's poised to come back and compete for a sixth world championship. She's almost gone three-in-a-row. She got interrupted in the previous season by Greg Anderson at the very last race of the year, and she kinda carried that with her 'til last year and just dominated."
Pro Stock Motorcycle: "Matt Smith just captured his sixth world championship, which places him in pretty good company - there's only two other riders who have ever done that. And he's gonna come back - and now he has factory support from Suzuki - he's going to come back and try to become the first person to capture a seventh championship."
NASCAR Legend Tony Stewart Goes Drag Racing
After spending his entire career racing ovals in sprint cars, IndyCar, and NASCAR, Tony Stewart is looking for a new challenge on four wheels - drag racing. He's publicly announced that he will be pursuing a championship in Top Alcohol Dragster competition, the level below Top Fuel Dragster where his wife, Leah Pruett, currently races. Brian Lohnes expects Stewart to land in Top Fuel in the coming years after getting his feet wet in the feeder series.
Lohnes: "We knew it was only a matter of time before he [Stewart] got in a car. He's in six different racing halls of fame, and he wasn't going to sit there and be a spectator. The neatest thing about what he has done is that he has taken this long-road approach. We've often seen people come in and dabble in drag racing at a high level, and then they just come in and (leave). He is really dedicating himself to becoming proficient at this before he gets in a car.
"You don't bet against this guy....he's brought such positivity to the sport, he's brought a great attitude, and he is respected by the people he's racing. They do not want to lose to him, and so he knows that. He knows every time he pulls to the starting line, he's going to get the best out of the person he is competing against, and that's what makes it fun to watch."

Lohnes: "The NHRA channel is for anybody who even has a passing interest in drag racing. You may be a person who's like, 'Oh man, I used to watch that back in the day, but I don't really follow it much anymore' - bam. Because you're going to flip that thing on, and you might be transported back to 1987 at the U.S. Nationals, or you could be watching a race from last weekend that aired on FS1 or from earlier in the season.
"The reality is - this channel's great, and it has a load of different content on it. It's not simply just what you saw during a previous race this season. There's all kinds of historical stuff on there, and we're actually going to be working really hard this year to be doing additional, even sometimes live content, on that channel - maybe pre-race shows, post-race shows, that type of thing.
"The neatest thing about the NHRA channel is that, one: it is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you will always see drag racing on there. And, two: if you play your cards right, you may be transported back in time to when you were a kid watching on your living room floor...or you may be transported back to a race you missed earlier this season just this year. Whether it's the legends of the old days that you want to watch or the people competing today, you will have ample opportunity - plus all the specialty content that we'll create for that as well."
