In Bob Barker, it had an ideal host. Thanks perhaps to his hardscrabble roots growing up on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, South Dakota, Barker always seemed genuinely delighted by his contestants' victories (and just as importantly, sympathetic and comforting in their failures).
But his greatest attribute may have been his wit. With nearly every contestant in hysterics when called to “Come on Down!”, Barker had to navigate the emotions of all who were summoned to the stage, from flabbergasted grandmothers to overeager college students. His sharp but inclusive sense of humor helped calm the nerves of both the contestants and the audience.
We haven’t even mentioned his animal rights advocacy, which undoubtedly saved the lives of thousands of would-be strays thanks to a gentle reminder to—say it with me—“help control the pet population, get your pets spayed or neutered.” It’s easy enough to utter a catchphrase at the end of the show, but Barker backed it up in his private life; in 1994, he created the DJ&T Foundation to help fund animal-neutering programs, and he gave millions of dollars to a variety of organizations during his lifetime.
In sum, if you’re over the age of 30, you almost certainly have a fond memory of Barker.
