Fear Factor
Long before he became one of the world’s best-known podcasters, Joe Rogan hosted Fear Factor, a primetime NBC show whose premise could be summarized as, “I dare you to…” Airing from 2001 to 1006, most episodes featured six contestants – usually three men and three women – taking on three stunts, with the winner going home with a $50,000 cash prize. Typically, the first stunt would be some sort of physical test, followed by a more mental/ gastrointestinal challenge (aka eating/ immersing yourself in something gross), followed by a final challenge in the form of a big action stunt.
The show was extremely novel at the time, with few unscripted shows airing on network television. And while it may not have a legacy on the scale of Survivor or American Idol, Fear Factor is still a fun, highly bingeable show that’s at least as responsible as News Radio for bringing Joe Rogan into broad public consciousness.

Cheaters
Another staple of early ‘00s television, Cheaters was a syndicated show in which a team of private investigators/ television producers got the scoop on spouses who were suspected of infidelity. As the show’s name suggests, pretty much every “case” did indeed catch a suspected cheater “creeping on the down low,” as TLC so eloquently put it. But what Cheaters lacked in suspense in more than made up for in drama, as the final act “confrontation” was a coin-flip in terms of a fight breaking out. In this respect, Cheaters shared a lot of DNA with another daytime TV staple of its era: Jerry Springer (which is also available on Sling Freestream).

All Weddings by WE tv
If only Marriage Boot Camp had been around at the time of Cheaters, so much heartache could have been avoided. Instead, a new franchise – born of the ashes of Bridezillas – was launched, and All Weddings by WE tv has a non-stop feed of the show and its many spin-offs. Originally centered on couples who appeared in the WE tv series Bridezillas, Marriage Boot Camp quickly expanded its scope and pulled in other reality stars including members of the Jersey Shore cast, several Real Housewives, and rappers like Cee-Lo Green and Waka Flocka Flame.

VH1 I Love Reality
The Pluto TV channel VH1 I Love Reality is home to a pair of seminal reality shows: The Surreal Life and Basketball Wives. Premiering in 2003, The Surreal Life featured ‘80s stars like Corey Feldman, Vince Neil, and MC Hammer living together The Real World-style. Along with Vince Neil, several of the celebrities on The Surreal Life would go on to star in their own reality shows, including Flavor Flav (season 3), Da Brat (season 4), and Sandy “Pepa” Denton ( season 5).
Basketball Wives has basically become the Real Housewives franchise for VH1. The main series premiered in 2010 and featured a roster of current or former spouses or partners to basketball stars like Shaquille O’Neal, Matt Barnes, Dwight Howard, and others. 14 years later, the series is still going strong, and six other spin-offs have aired.
