The Pressure is on in 'Welcome To Wrexham' Season 2

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are back and gunning for the big league in season 2 of 'Welcome To Wrexham' on FX.

All TV shows try to improve in their second season, but that’s doubly the case for FX’s hit docuseries Welcome To Wrexham. Not only does the show need to build on its highly entertaining first season, but the team Wrexham FC needs to get better in order to make its way up from the bottom level of the English Football Pyramid.

If you didn’t follow the team during the 2022-23 season, we won’t spoil the latter point, but in terms of the show’s entertainment value, Wrexham is still a winner. The team’s new owners — Ryan Reynolds aka Deadpool and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney — still remain the focus, and their humor and chemistry is a big part of the show’s charm. However, like a scene-stealing character actor, the everyday fans and players are the show’s real draw.

A big part of their appeal is due to the delicate sense of civic pride that’s tied up in the team’s redemption. The show’s first season did not end happily, at least not entirely so, as Wrexham, with a shot at promotion on the line, lost a heartbreaking match in extra time. However, the team’s improvement under their new American owners, along with the international attention the team generated thanks to the documentary, left fans and players optimistic about the future of both the club and the Welsh city itself.

But in the first episode of the new season, that optimism is muted by the specter of the team’s serious financial issues. With the team’s salaries exploding due to the contracts of the players who were signed to move them up out of the National League, its new owners face financial ruin if the team fails to get promoted. Moreover, a dilapidated, standing-room only section of the stadium known as the Kop needs to be replaced, and Reynolds and McElhenney are looking to secure public funds to offset some of the estimated $20 million cost.

On top of all this, they’re stressed about meeting the King of England. In many ways, the season 2 premiere is the quintessential episode of Welcome to Wrexham. There are surreal moments involving the celebrity of the club’s famous owners, little vignettes that illustrate the depth of the fans’ passion, insightful and candid interviews with Wrexham’s players and executives, and sprinkles of drama around the team’s matches and precarious financial situation. It all combines into one of the most entertaining docuseries on TV, whether or not you’re a sports fan. Welcome to Wrexham taps into something more universal than specific sports allegiances; it’s about the power of community and belief, and the way those two things can rub together to spark a fire. And if you followed the headlines during the 2023-23 season, you know that this season is just warming up.
