FX's 'Dear Mama' Explores the Legacy and Bond of Tupac and Afeni Shakur
Tupac and his Black Panther mother Afeni are profiled in FX's new five-part docuseries. Here's what to expect and how to watch with Sling.
Immortalized west-coast rapper Tupac Shakur is undoubtedly one of the most well-known artists in hip-hop culture. Whether recording as 2pac or Makeveli, Shakur’s accolades helped him become one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 75 million records sold worldwide. The hardcore lifestyle and conscious rap lyrics personified in his music are rooted in the struggles and upbringing of his early life.
Shakur’s family lineage is powerful, stemming from Black Panther leaders who spearheaded the coast-to-coast rise of black activism from the early 1960’s to the late 1970’s. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was a revolutionary and an outspoken political visionary – an elevated female leader. Her life wasn’t without struggle, however. Afeni’s substance abuse issues caused rifts in her relationship with Tupac, prompting a tragic personal battle between the love for her son and the need to serve her addiction.
Their story of mother and son and their resilient life together was captured in Tupac's ode to Afeni, “Dear Mama”. Tupac's passionate poetry in "Dear Mama" is vivid and illuminating; it’s sure to lump the throat of anyone who knows the depths of maternal love.
