What is School Spirits about?
School Spirits kicks off in the gym with our main character, Maddie Nears (played by the talented Peyton List from Cobra Kai) at a vigil for a missing student. The crowd of nervous students and teachers are all anxious for answers about what happened. Confused as to why no one can hear her, Maddie soon gets an unexpected reality check from a boy next to her: like him, Maddie is not just a bystander; she’s a ghost trapped at Split River High School!
As Maddie navigates this strange new existence, she meets other ghosts from the school's colorful history—students and even a teacher who have all died at various points over the last 70 years. Each ghost has their own story to tell, and as the series unfolds, we learn how they met their untimely demise and why they’re stuck in the afterlife at Split River High. Their backstories add depth and emotional weight to the show, making you feel for these spectral characters.
Channeling her inner Nancy Drew, Maddie doesn’t just sit around feeling sorry for herself; she forms her own “Scooby Gang” of ghostly pals and even enlists the help of her living friends. Together, they embark on a thrilling journey to investigate Maddie’s own mysterious death. The mix of nostalgia, friendship, and suspense makes for a captivating viewing experience, and the twisty story keeps you guessing about what happened to Maddie.
One of the standout features of School Spirits is its clever integration of supernatural elements tied to the same locations where the characters met their ends. Each episode reveals fascinating stories behind the ghosts, often intertwining with the school’s history and the eerie atmosphere that fills Split River High. As the first season progresses, you’ll find yourself invested not just in Maddie’s quest for answers but also in the lives (and afterlives) of her fellow ghosts. The show does an excellent job of balancing humor and heartfelt moments, making it perfect for binge-watching.
School Spirits just wrapped up its second season with a thrilling cliffhanger that introduces a new twist to the supernatural aspects of the series. Although it hasn’t officially been picked up for a third season, in a recent interview with TV Insider, the show’s producers said they have “a really clear vision of the show and the big strokes of where we're going.” That means it’s the perfect time to dive into both seasons of School Spirits. After all, if there’s one thing we learned from this show, it’s that none of us know how much time we have left. - Jessalyn Bradley
