Here We Are Once Again
In recent years, we have seen a few key themes re-emerge time and time again. Someone is injured and or fighting for their life is what you would expect for a medical drama. But what has taken me by surprise is the fact that we are in the midst of another, seemingly intractable conflict between original cast members Richard (James Pickens Jr.) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). For someone who moved away, Meredith sure can't help but to cause a kerfuffle within the walls of Grey Sloan Memorial. Still, I’m personally on Meredith’s side this time. Can Richard REALLY be mad at her for following her patient’s request for privacy, even if said patient is Richard’s wife, Katherine (Debbie Allen)? When you consider the fact that Ellen’s new project Good American Family premieres on March 19, this very well may be the catalyst that sends Meredith back to Boston. For good.
And Then There Were Four
Our interns have lost their first classmate, and while that’s expected in every class, it doesn't make it any easier.
In the last episode of the season, we see Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) returning to work following a car accident that resulted in the death of her younger sister Chloe (Julia Rose). Yasuda tries to maintain her typical brave face until but that only lasts for so long. While Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is attempting to save a coding patient in the chaotic ER, Mika’s guilt and grief rears its ugly head, leaving her begging her teacher to save her sister who is already gone. Following what some may have seen as an inevitable breakdown, Mika realizes that she cannot remain in a place that carries so much heartache and guilt.
Midori Francis’ portrayal of grief in all its forms was one of the most poignant and emotional moments of the season. While she has exited Grey’s to pursue new creative opportunities, you can also catch her in the HBO Original Series The Sex Lives of College Girls
While he isn’t an intern, another notable exit was that of Chief Resident Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) who decides to leave Seattle to pursue an opportunity in pediatric surgery in Texas. Over the years we have watched him become a kind yet passionate doctor and a fierce best friend to Jo (Camilla Luddington). Levi has come such a long way from the bumbling intern who dropped his glasses in an open patient. But regardless of the shaky foundation we started with, Levi became an integral part of the Grey’s cast. His humor, sass, and plethora of awkward encounters added a much needed humanizing element to a show that can often verge on the unbelievable. No one deserves to ride off into the sunset with their newfound love more than him.
Old Places, New Faces?
Never fear, Ben Warren is here! Many fans (myself included) were excited to see that Miranda’s husband Ben (Jason George) is returning to Grey Sloan as a doctor once more. Ben was originally introduced WAAAYYY back when in season 6 of Grey’s Anatomy and was known for his tendency to career hop (anesthesiologist to surgical resident to firefighter, back to surgical resident). His re-entry to the surgical resident program comes with its challenges, specifically the fact that his wife is his boss. But if there is any couple that could navigate a sticky dynamic like this, it's Ben and Miranda.
Beyond this return, we really have no indication of any additional guest stars or returning members. While we have had an appearance from the stunning Sophia Bush as Dr. Cass Beckman, viewers can never know who will come through those ER doors. One thing you can bet on though is that they are sure to cause a stir. - Amani Chatterton
Key plot points from Grey’s Anatomy Season 21:
- Richard is mad at Meredith for not telling him about Catherine’s condition; personally I’m on Meredith's side.
- Yasuda quit; honestly valid. I couldn’t work in the hospital where my sister died.
- Jo is pregnant with twins; but maybe not anymore?
- Jo and Skywalker were held at gunpoint with Adams tackling the perpetrator. But at what cost?
- Ben Warren is back, baby!
