Which candidates are participating in the first Republican primary debate?
In order to qualify for the Republican debate, according to USA Today, “Candidates must poll at least 1% in three national polls or 1% in two national polls and 1% from an early state poll from two ‘carve out’ states recognized by the committee.” In addition, candidates need to “have a minimum of 40,000 unique donors part of their presidential campaign committee - with at least 200 unique donors per state - and sign a pledge agreeing to support the eventual party nominee.”
Although he holds a significant lead in polling among Republican voters, former president Donald Trump decided not to participate in Wednesday’s debate, he announced on Sunday (Trump will do a sit down interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead). With Trump skipping the debate, here’s a full list of the candidates expected to appear at Wednesday’s event in Milwaukee:
- Ron Desantis (Governor of Florida)
- Tim Scott (South Carolina Senator)
- Nikki Haley (Former South Carolina Governor)
- Vivek Ramaswamy (Biotech entrepreneur)
- Chris Christie (Former New Jersey Governor)
- Doug Burgum (North Dakota Governor)
- Mike Pence (Former Vice President)
- Asa Hutchinson (Former Arkansas Governor)
- Perry Johnson (Businessman)
When are the other debates and when do primaries begin?
The only other officially sanctioned Republican debate that has been announced is a Sept. 27 event from the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA. On Sunday, Trump suggested that he will not take part in that debate as well, but it remains to be seen. The second Republican primary debate is scheduled to air on Fox Business.
The first primary is the Iowa caucus, which takes place on January 15. New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina, Michigan, and Idaho follow in February and early March, before multiple states vote on Super Tuesday, which lands on March 5, 2024.
