Jefferson White – who Sling interviewed ahead of the Season 3 finale in the video above – recently confirmed that his fan-favorite character Jimmy Hurdstrom will also return for the final episodes. However, there is one notable name missing from this list: Series star Kevin Costner.

Is Kevin Costner Returning To Yellowstone?

The short answer appears to be “No, but…”. Following more than a year of speculation, Costner confirmed in June that he would not be returning to the show for its final episodes, instead turning his focus on his multi-part western epic Horizon, which he co-wrote, directed, and starred in. Here’s Costner’s Instagram post announcing the news:

However, when the trailer for Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 was released last month, Costner’s character John Dutton was featured prominently. Although The Hollywood Reporter describes Costner’s appearance in the trailer as “scenes likely to wrap his character,” the Horizon films did not do well at the box office, and Paramount has been noticeably quiet about John Dutton’s role in the story over its final episodes. The bottom line is that we’ll just have to tune-in to find out.

UPDATE WITH SPOILERS: It turned out that Costner’s appearance in the trailer was a bit of misdirection, as the new episodes opened with Beth and Kacey arriving at his home to discover that he had died in an apparent suicide. We say apparent, because later in the episode, it was revealed that their brother Jamie and his lover Sarah were behind his death.

What Happened in Part 1 of Yellowstone Season 5?

Given that it’s been nearly two years since the last new episode of Yellowstone, you’re pardoned if you forgot the storylines. Here’s a brief recap, courtesy of Newsweek:

Season 5, Part 1, of the series saw John Dutton (Costner) become governor of Montana, using his political power to protect the family's ranch from corporate and environmental threats. However, tensions within the family reached a boiling point when Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) made a bold move by publicly calling for his father's impeachment.

Meanwhile, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) uncovered Jamie's scheme and began plotting her own brutal counterstrike. Armed with knowledge of Jamie's role in the murder of his biological father, Beth hinted at using this information to destroy her brother. At the same time, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) wrestled with personal struggles away from the ranch.
