'Alone' and 5 Other Survivalist Shows to Watch in the Wild With Sling TV
The HISTORY hit 'Alone' is back for a new season. Here's how to stream with Sling TV, along with five other shows fans will love.
For many people, the thought of waking up alone in the wilderness is a legit worst fear. For a select few, that idea is close to bliss. For even fewer, it’s a paycheck.

The HISTORY channel smash Alone returns for its tenth season on Thursday, June 8, and once again, it is not for the faint of heart. The show follows ten contestants who are isolated in the wilderness with nothing but 10 items and their wits, as they attempt to outlast the competition and head home with a $500k cash prize. HISTORY is promising that this season – which was filmed in “Northern Saskatchewan, Canada–home to vicious predators including territorial black bear, wolves, and moose” – will be “the series’ toughest season yet.”
If you’ve watched the show, you know that will be a tall bar to clear, but we’re not doubting it. Alone is the type of show that will both inspire and terrify in equal measure, but it’s not the only one. Whether you’re relaxing at home on the couch or firing up the Sling TV app on your phone to watch DVR’d shows in the wilderness, here are five other survivalist shows to binge this summer. I Survived Bear Grylls

Taking survivalist challenges and placing it in a pure game show format, the new TBS show I Survived Bear Grylls is a warning to Survivor-watching sofa-surfers who arrogantly mutter, “I could do that.” Each episode features five contestants taking on a series of challenges based on Bear’s most extreme adventures. At the end of the episode, a winner is crowned and, spoiler alert, it’s generally NOT the person braying about how how easy this will be.
New episodes return Thursday, June 15 at 9pm ET on TBS - Watch with Sling Orange or Blue!
Race to Survive: Alaska
Basically a mashup of The Amazing Race and Survivor, Race to Survive: Alaska wrapped its first season this week and crowned a winner. Like The Amazing Race, Race to Survive: Alaska pairs teammates off against the remaining competition, while its challenges are reminiscent of the Survivor immunity challenges. We won’t spoil the ending, but this USA Network original certainly had its share of drama this season, starting with an emergency evacuation in the first episode.

Stars on Mars

It’s probably a stretch to call FOX’s new reality competition Stars on Mars a survivalist show (after all, the shows “stars” are not actually living on the Red Planet; they’re in a simulator in the Australian outback). Still, if you’re looking for a novel twist on the format, this new show – hosted by Star Trek legend William Shatner and featuring stars like Christopher Mintz-Plasse (aka McLovin from Superbad), Modern Family's Ariel Winter and athletes like Lance Armstrong, Ronda Rousey, and Marshawn Lynch – is ready for liftoff. As a bonus, Vanderpump Rules fans who have been scorned by Tom Sandoval will enjoy imagining him banished to Mars, Dr. Manhattan-style.
New episodes of Stars on Mars air Mondays at 8pm ET on FOX, available with Sling Blue or Orange + Blue in select markets.
Naked and Afraid
As we mentioned at the top, if isolation in the wilderness isn't your worst fear, walking around naked in public might be. Discovery’s long-running survival franchise Naked and Afraid blends these nightmarish scenarios into a single horrifying experience. Oddly enough, Race to Survive: Alaska contestant Max Djenohan made it 156 days on Naked and Afraid and its spin-off Naked and Afraid XL, but he claims that RTSA was more difficult. As fans of both clothing and creature comforts like ceilings and AC, we’ll just have to take his word for it.
All 15 seasons of Naked and Afraid , plus spin-offs like Naked and Afraid XL and Naked and Afraid: Uncensored , are available on discovery+ with Sling.
Yellowjackets

And finally, SHOWTIME’s newest hit Yellowjackets may not be a reality show, but when it comes to the horrors of surviving the wilderness, it doesn’t get much gnarlier than this. Told in parallel stories, Yellowjackets flashes back to a ‘90s high school soccer team pushed to the brink following a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness, intercut with the messy lives of the surviving adult women, who are still sorting through the trauma. Yellowjackets wears its influences (Lost and Twin Peaks, primarily) like tattoos, but it probes a question relevant to all of the shows listed above: We may leave the wilderness, but does the wilderness ever leave us?
Add SHOWTIME to your Sling package to watch the first two seasons of Yellowjackets.
