Find the Best Placement for an HD Antenna
If you’re using an indoor antenna to receive your local channels over the air, use these tips to ensure the best viewing experience:
Make sure to orient your antenna correctly
Over-the-air (OTA) broadcasts are transmitted from a broadcast tower to your antenna, and finally, to your TV. To receive the strongest signal, you’ll want to orient your antenna toward these towers.
Check where you’re placing your antenna in your home
Interior objects such as walls, floors, and cabinets, and exterior objects like trees, buildings, or billboards can act as obstructions and impact the strength of the signal you’re receiving.
For better reception, try to keep your antenna about five feet away from metallic objects, electronics such as TVs or laptops, or heavily-trafficked areas of your home, as these could cause interference and impact reception.
Use an amplifier or powered indoor antenna
An amplifier can help to overcome the loss in signal strength that occurs when the signal travels through the coaxial cable between your antenna and your TV when the signal you’re receiving is already weak, especially if you’re further away from a broadcast transmission tower.
Make sure the coaxial cable is in good condition
Make sure the coaxial (coax) cable's outer coating (shielding) is free from nicks and scratches. If you can see any of the internal metal braiding of the coax (except for that which is exposed at both connection ends), there is a potential for signal loss and disruption. Also make sure the fittings on both ends of the cable are tight-fitting and the copper wire in the center is not bent.
Try a longer coaxial cable
Try using a longer coax cable than you believe you need, so you’ll be able to place your antenna in a window. If the cable is too long, make a semi-loose coil between the antenna and your TV. If possible, keep your antenna away from equipment that gives off a wireless signal, such as routers, laptops, or mobile devices.
